For 9 years, Harmony has been leading the choir and bringing our community together through the power of song. She’s been a true teacher for me in many ways, not the least of which has been how strong a fuel passion can truly be. Twice a year she spends 12-16 weeks teaching a group of us a diverse and complex collection of songs from around the world. In the months leading up to the first practice, and throughout the many weeks leading up to the performances, she puts in a staggering amount of work - countless hours sleuthing the internet for nearly-untraceable notation of songs from ancient nation-states, recording dozens of practice tracks for us to learn our individual parts, and generally racking her brain trying to ensure the community has a meaningful experience at our eventual performance. All of this she does while charging nearly nothing (3 months for nearly the price of 3 dozen eggs).
The choir truly is a labor of love. Typically, choir directors are paid for their time and efforts. The Williams World Community Choir, like most things in our community, are not what many people would consider typical. After the already-low priced tuition, the fact that she’ll make the choir accessible to anyone regardless of financial status (scholarship), paying composers for the rights to perform their music, paying musicians and sound-engineers to help with the production, and covering costs for things like the venue, flyers, and other small items, there is very little leftover.
In my dreams, I have enough money to fund everyone’s passions so they could pursue them until the world erupts with beauty and creativity. Alas, I’m awake, and I still think twice before buying eggs - I’ve started the GoFunMe to compensate for that discrepancy.
Funds will go to improving our sound systems for the choir (new microphones!), paying composers for rights to their music, compensating musicians, and hopefully to Harmony herself (if she believes in such things), for the tireless hours she puts into maintaining such a beautiful and critical opportunity for everyone in our community to gather around the magic and grace of shared song.
Thank you for reading, and thank you for any/all contributions you choose to share - be they financial or otherwise!
