As of October 3rd, we have achieved our fundraising goal. Thank you to all of those who have contributed. Please join us at the Dedication ceremony on October 11 at 11am on the grounds of the old Wallaceville School at the corner of Silvery Lane and Ann Arbor Trail.
****
A small, informal group of former students and teachers from Wallaceville Elementary School located in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, have been meeting for the past years and have agreed that a marker should be placed at the site of the old school commemorating it’s past existence.
The building was constructed as a WPA project in 1938, closed in 1979 and ultimately demolished in 1982. The marker will be dedicated to honor the students, teachers, support staff as well as others who enjoyed the gym, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, playgrounds and even its tiny ice rink.
We need help in fundraising for the memorial. We anticipate the total budget will be about $10,000:
- $5,100 for the black granite boulder
- $3,100 for a 8” grey granite base
- $800 for a full color porcelain photo of the school (although this is not definite)
- $540 sales tax
- $500 for miscellaneous expenses, including a dedication ceremony.
Any unused funds will be donated to charities to be determined.
The Memorial Marker will be 40” wide, 30” high and 12” deep. The 8” granite base is necessary to prevent heaving and movement. It will be located on the corner of Silvery Lane and Ann Arbor Trail, at the site of Wallaceville, next to the Legacy Park Circle Condominiums who generously gave us permission to place the marker on their property.
Please donate in any amount you feel comfortable with. Amounts of $5, $25, $50 or more will be appreciated.
Whether as a student, teacher or a visitor with the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Little League, Summer Recreation and more, most involved with Wallaceville had positive, memorable experiences.
Thank you for your consideration.
