Support The Vankoughnett Family Through This Health Battle

I'm Jenna Genau, daughter of Tim and Evelyn Vankoughnett, and I truly appreciate you taking the time to read our story. This time of year can be tough for many of us, but this holiday season certainly hits hard for our family.

For the past year, my father has been suffering from liver disease, and about 3 months ago, we were told that he is in end-stage liver failure. We focused every effort on fighting the symptoms, with every ounce of hope that we could eventually get him a new liver.

About a month ago, my father took a terrible fall and was rushed to the ER. Samaritan immediately transported my father to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, to reside under the care of some of the best liver transplant specialists. During the initial exam, they told us that my father had broken his ankle and would need rehab as he is already in a very weakened state. Additionally, they began a very comprehensive evaluation, including numerous blood tests, imaging, heart tests, consultations, fitness tests, and cancer screenings. It was then that Neuro found several brain bleeds. My father underwent emergency brain surgery with very little chance of survival and spent several weeks in the ICU. The bleeding came back, so he then had an additional brain surgery and miraculously pushed through that one as well.

As you can imagine, we celebrated every win that we could get. Unfortunately, after all of this, we received the devastating news that Dad was not eligible to receive a liver.

We are continuing to love and support Dad and focusing on keeping him comfortable. My mother has spent almost every day by his side and will continue to do so. True love.
