In September 2024, Georgia passed a controversial law that severely restricts the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals. Officially titled the "Law on the Protection of Family Values and Minors," it was introduced by the ruling party, Georgian Dream, and imposes extensive limitations on LGBTQ+ rights.
The law includes several key provisions:
- Ban on same-sex marriages: Same-sex marriages, even if legally performed abroad, are not recognized in Georgia.
- Ban on LGBTQ+ representation and incest propaganda: The portrayal of same-sex relationships and incest in schools, media, and public events is heavily restricted. The law equates homosexuality with incest, which further stigmatizes the LGBTQ+ community.
- Ban on adoption: Same-sex couples are prohibited from adopting children.
- Ban on gender-affirming treatments: Medical procedures related to gender transition are prohibited.
- Censorship of media content: Films, books, and other media addressing LGBTQ+ themes may be censored or banned.
The foundation of the electronic music scene is deeply rooted in queer and BIPOC communities. Already in the 70s and 80s club spaces were used as vital places for self expression and living out queer identities —far from societal norms and discrimination. Till today, club culture remain some of the safest environments for marginalized groups. The techno scene has always been a space for political protest and social change, especially regarding equality, diversity, and acceptance. So its our turn now to take actions and support the communities facing pressure worldwide.
