Hello everyone!
We’re getting ready for our third season of getting local produce into the hands of the people, and we’re calling on you for support!
WHAT IS THE PEOPLE’S FARMSTAND?
The People’s Farmstand is a free weekly farmstand that shows up directly in working-class and student neighborhoods with organic, local produce. We believe all people should have access to food that nourishes their bodies and makes them happy, regardless of their ability to pay.
WHERE ARE THE VEGGIES FROM?
We pick up donated produce from Diggers Mirth Collective Farm, Intervale Community Farm, UVM Farmer Training Program, Burnt Rock Farm, the Intervale Center and the Vermont Food Bank. We also buy some specialty produce that we can’t find as donations from Hyacinthe Ayingene and Tamarack Hollow Farm.
WHAT YOUR DONATION GOES TOWARDS
- Labor. The operating costs for the Farmstand are almost entirely in labor. Our team works full days every Friday, harvesting, washing, transporting, and dispersing produce.
- Specialty produce. A large number of the families we work with are from Somalia, Nepal, Bhutan, and Democratic Republic of Congo. We provide produce from their countries of origin such as collard greens (sukuma), bitter melon (तीतो तरबूज), and mulukhiyah (ملوخية). We also provide staples like potatoes and onions, which are highly sought after and store well for the winter months. This produce we buy from local farmers, as it is not readily available as "seconds" donations, but is incredibly important to have!
- Gas money. We do a lot of transporting produce!
- Supplies. A tent for rainy days, totes, bags, gloves, and hand sanitizer.
- Growth fund. Any excess funds would help start a fund for future seasons, allowing us to slowly grow as needed.
