Help Us Launch Vikas Bloom – A New Beginning for Women in India

In 2016, I travelled to India to volunteer with Transform Projects, a creative initiative raising environmental awareness in vulnerable communities. What I witnessed there changed my life—especially the strength of the women I met.

These women carried 50kg bags of cement, often doing the hardest work while men waited for higher-paid tasks. Many supported entire families, only to have their earnings taken by intoxicated partners. Despite facing domestic violence and poverty, they showed up every day with courage, grace, and even a smile.

When the project ended, I couldn’t leave. I was learning too much. I began searching for a place to volunteer long-term—and that’s when I found a rescue home for girls and women, many of whom had been orphaned, abandoned, or were survivors of sexual violence.

What I expected to be a place of sorrow turned out to be filled with joy, laughter, and resilience. The very next day, I was sitting on the ground colouring with the young girls at their school. And I stayed.

During this time, I connected with the residents, staff, and trustees. It became clear that I had to return and continue supporting this institution.

The following year, I wasn’t alone—Transform Projects returned as well! This time, we were housed within the institution itself.

It was then that I met a resident who changed everything—and inspired me to take this journey further.

A Connection That Changed Everything

During that time, I met her. A survivor of domestic violence, she had come to the shelter to protect herself and her daughter. I understood her pain—I had experienced orphanhood, and I knew what it meant to feel helpless and unseen. But for her, being confined in the institution made things even harder.

While they were safe and fed, the outside world remained out of reach. There were no opportunities for the women to gain independence—no jobs, no future. She had worked all her life as a cleaner and seamstress, earning barely enough to survive. With no outside support, her dreams felt impossible. I couldn’t walk away.

I offered her a small stipend—equivalent to what she earned—so she could train in beauty therapy, a career she chose herself. I gave her a sewing machine to help her earn extra income.

She did the rest.

Today, she’s a self-sufficient single mother with her own career. And her daughter? Once a shy six-year-old, she’s now 18 and running her own small business—breaking the cycle of child marriage and reclaiming her future.

Now It’s Time to Multiply That Impact

The same rescue home that changed both of our lives has now opened its doors to something new: a vocational training centre.

Even more inspiring—the same woman who first inspired my journey will now lead the beauty therapy training program, helping other women take control of their lives.

We’re calling it Vikas Bloom—Vikas means growth.
