On Wednesday April 2nd of 2025, there was a knock at the Hew family's door. It was their landlord, visiting without warning and coming to tell them that they were being evicted from their home of 11 years. 11 years, with no complaints made against the family in all this time, a home overturned in one night. They have been given 8 weeks to leave before the landlord prepares to sell the house on June 2nd.

Pre-Covid, the landlord would take care of the property and pay for things that broke, like burst pipes and renovations to the bathroom and kitchen - but after Covid, the family was met with indirect threats to sell the house if something else broke, making the family terrified to report any breakages. Anything that went wrong with the house from that point forward, they were pressured to pay out of pocket to avoid losing their home. From there, rent increased, and it became far harder to pay for their beloved home.

Cassandra Hew, a single mother of three, is a careworker, working seven days a week from 9am to 7 just to make ends meet for the household. Her partner was paying half of the rent to assist the family, but after they parted ways, putting aside savings to one day purchase the home became near impossible.

Mark Hew, Cassandras oldest son, has been desperately job hunting for months to help with rent only less than a year out of college, and already needing a well paying job - enough to help support a house - at 19 years old.

The family, together, has been just getting by and hoping to stay as long as possible, but with their new situation, it is no longer possible. It would take about £200,000 to buy their current house so they could stay. The only feasible option left is to move into a new rental, but the family cannot afford a deposit on a new home.

If the family has nowhere to go by June 2nd, they would be forced to be overcrowded in another family members home with no access to internet or public transportation. Cassandras youngest children - 16 and 10 - would be farther away from their highschool and primary school, the lack of public transportation making it much harder to attend. On top of it all, the loss of independence and privacy would be devastating to the family of four in such a small space.

I, Anna Campbell, have known Mark Hew for multiple years. He is one of the hardest working people I have ever met, with a huge heart full of concern for his mother and younger sisters. The blow to this family has visibly hurt him, and I have watched him send out dozens of applications in desperation to help with rent, willing to drive an hour out of his way just to try to make things work. He puts his family before himself and despite everything they have gone through, he remains loyal and continues to persevere. He declined to make a page at first, but upon the situation growing more dire, he hesitantly asked for help. To protect the family's identity, I have not included a picture of them - but, knowing Mark as long as I have, I do not believe he or his family deserve to be on the streets or have their personal growth squished into a box.

The Hew house has seen many stories and phases of life come and go, with partners, pets, and milestones. To say goodbye to a house filled with 11 years of memories is a painful and long process.
