WHAT HAPPENED

On the morning of August 8, 2025—the two-year anniversary of the Lahaina wildfire tragedy—ICE agents arrested and detained a Lahaina wildfire survivor, Sergio Haro, in front of his children. His family has already endured enormous loss. Their homes and businesses were destroyed in the Lahaina fires in 2023, and like so many others, they have spent the last two years rebuilding their lives from the ashes. Even while healing, they continued to pour love into their community—never asking for anything in return.

WHO HE IS

Sergio Haro first came to the U.S. as a minor and has been a valuable member of the Hawai‘i community for over 20 years. He has no criminal record. He is a devoted husband, loving father of three daughters, and proud grandfather to his infant grandson, all of whom live in Hawaii and have legal status. Not only is he his family’s rock, he is a pillar in the Maui community. Before the fires, he gathered the Latino community every Sunday for soccer games, fostering a sense of joy and connection in his community. He also taught martial arts to children, often waiving the cost for families who couldn’t afford to pay.

Today, he is held in ICE detention and facing permanent separation from his family and the place he has called home for over two decades. His family is left navigating significant trauma from witnessing his arrest, including panic attacks, sleepless nights, and a growing financial crisis. Sergio has always been their rock. Without him, they are struggling to cover:

HIS FAMILY

His daughter, Stephanie Haro-Sevilla, is my friend and colleague, and a respected pro bono immigration attorney in our community. I have personally known Stephanie since she was a law student, and her empathy, compassion, personal resilience, and ferocity as an advocate serve as an inspiration to me and my immigration advocate colleagues. I have seen her comfort and hold the hands of immigrant children when they have challenging meetings with their lawyer, feed her client’s children so they don’t go hungry during lengthy immigration appointments, and refuse to back down from legal challenges that many seasoned attorneys would be afraid to undertake.

She is a shining star in her field, a true unicorn, someone who is purely and singularly motivated by her own family’s immigration experience and the love she has for our community. Her commitment to supporting marginalized communities comes directly from the values her father modeled: kindness, selflessness, and service.

Stephanie helped create and manage the statewide immigration detention hotline in Hawai’i that people can call when their loved one has been taken by ICE. If you have ever called this hotline, you have likely crossed paths with Stephanie and witnessed her dedication and compassion firsthand. Since the hotline began, she has answered hundreds of calls from community members seeking help, fought and won detention and deportation cases, and reunited families across Hawaiʻi — all while carrying the weight of her own trauma from the Lahaina wildfires and constant worry for her father. Now her worst fear has come true.

She has selflessly dedicated her life to serving our community, and this is her hour of need.

La he conocido personalmente desde que era estudiante de derecho, y su empatía, compasión, resiliencia personal y ferocidad como defensora me inspiran a mí y a otros colegas defensores de inmigrantes. La he visto consolar y tomar de la mano a niños inmigrantes durante reuniones difíciles con sus abogados, alimentar a los hijos de sus clientes para que no pasen hambre durante largas citas de inmigración, y no retroceder ante desafíos legales que muchos abogados especializados temerían enfrentar. Es una verdadera estrella en su campo, un “unicornio” —motivado únicamente por la experiencia de inmigración de su propia familia y el amor que tiene por nuestra comunidad.
