Support the 29th Garífuna Settlement Commemoration in Punta Gorda, Roatán. – Help Preserve a Living Culture
In April of 1797, the Garífuna people arrived on the shores of Punta Gorda, marking the beginning of more than two centuries of identity, resilience, and cultural continuity in Honduras.
Today, 229 years later, this living culture continues through language, drumming, dance, and community life. Punta Gorda remains the symbolic birthplace of the Garífuna presence in Central America.
The 29th Garífuna Settlement Commemoration
The 29th Garífuna Settlement Commemoration is a community-led cultural event that brings together families, youth, artists, and the Garífuna diaspora to honor this history and keep it alive.
Over three days, Punta Gorda will host a structured program focused on cultural preservation, education, and community development, including:
- 29th Garífuna Settlement Commemoration Ceremonial Activities
- Garawoun Championship – Traditional Garífuna Drumming Preservation Initiative
- Afro Heritage Youth Forum (FEDU) – Youth Identity, Leadership, and Cultural Empowerment
- Yurumein International Summit – Dialogue, Cultural Safeguarding, and Community Development
- Garífuna Food Heritage Experience – Traditional Gastronomy and Cultural Economy
- Community Cultural Programs – Language, Dance, Oral History, and Intergenerational Knowledge
Why We Are Fundraising
This initiative is led by the Punta Gorda Community Council (PATRONATO) to safeguard and transmit Garífuna cultural heritage.
Funds will support essential components required to implement the 29th Garífuna Settlement Commemoration and its cultural programs, including:
- Cultural program production (traditional performances and ceremonial activities)
- Transportation and accommodation for cultural practitioners and community participants
- Basic infrastructure for community and educational activities
- Safety and event coordination
- Materials for youth programs and cultural knowledge transmission
How Funds Are Managed
This campaign is hosted in partnership with Garifuna Nation, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the United States.
All donations are received and managed through this nonprofit to ensure transparency and accountability. Funds will be used exclusively to support the organization and execution of the 29th Garífuna Settlement Commemoration in Punta Gorda, Roatán and its cultural programs.
