In August Caleb & Corinne welcomed their rainbow baby boy into the world. Aston was born with a heart murmur that was monitored by his pediatrician and it was recommended to be seen by a pediatric cardiologist. They went to see the Cardiologist and he was diagnosed with Supravalar Aortic Stenosis and Pulmonary Stenosis. This means he had narrowing in these arteries. It was decided that he just needed to be monitored as he grew to see if the narrowing got worse or if it was able to grow with him. He was growing and doing well. At the second visit on October 12th the echo showed the left pulmonary artery had gotten worse. He was still not in any danger, however we needed to get more information. An appointment was scheduled for a cardiac CT on October 25th. They went to the appointment with a happy two month old baby who was growing well and meeting all growing check points. Because he was only two months old he needed to be sedated for the CT scan which is when things went wrong.

While using the gas to put him to sleep his heart rate dropped to 60 which means he had to have chest compressions to be stabilized and brought back. They didn't know what caused his heart to have such a problem during a simple procedure. Caleb and Corinne's world was shattered. They had to wait to see their sweet baby boy because he had been admitted to the cardiac ICU. When. They finally got to see him he was stable and sedated. He would stay sedated so they could run tests to see what the problem was. The doctors decided the best course if action was to do a cardiac catheterization. The catheterization procedure was done the following day and it showed the issues with the Aortic and pulmonary arteries. It also showed the problem that causes the event of his heart to code. There was severe narrowing in the left coronary artery. With this information they were told Aston's case would be submitted to the board to see when they would do surgery. Later that afternoon the surgeon came in and let them know the surgery would be the next day! They were told without surgery there was a 100% chance of a second event that he wouldn't survive. With surgery there was a 10-15% chance he wouldn't make it out of surgery. They proceeded with surgery the next morning. Corinne and Caleb were able to hold Aston before surgery. He went in at 9am and was done and taken to recover at 6pm. The surgery went very well and they were able to patch all of the arteries. He is now on the long road of recovery. They don't know what the future holds as far as home care, follow ups, or additional treatment at this time. Aston is still in the ICU and healing. Any support you can give to help cover Aston and his family's needs is so very much appreciated.
