I've set up this Go Fund Me page to bring awareness to the situation that my sister Carina Crabtree and her family are presently in, with the hope that together we can help them.
In November 2022, Carina got sick with COVID and since then has been living with long-COVID complications. Her ongoing symptoms include intense intermittent fatigue, which have made it impossible for her to work and care for her family at this time. Simple everyday tasks that we take for granted, and even things we consider leisure, such as reading, having a conversation with loved ones, taking a shower or listening to a podcast (just to name a few), are things that at times can prove to be too strenuous. Since being diagnosed, her doctors have advised her that she must get consistent, "radical" rest. They are not sure that a full recovery is possible, but have stressed that rest is the best path back to a version of the life their family once knew. So, in addition to his full-time job, her husband Stefan, assumed Carina's responsibilities, including homeschooling their daughters. Last October, Stefan took a leave of absence from work to give Carina some extended time to recover, around which time he and the rest of the family got COVID again. Altogether, it has been over nine months since the family last had income from Stefan’s job. Stefan continues to do his best to manage the household, homeschool the girls, and care for Carina. Unfortunately, he is now also struggling with his own long-COVID health effects since that late 2023 infection and is finding he needs to pace and rest more himself. Ongoing exposure to COVID has also been a challenge; their most recent infection was just last month in August, which has set Stefan’s recovery in particular back a bit. Because of these ongoing health issues, Stefan and Carina are unsure when either of them will be able to return to work.

Up to this point, the family has managed to get by financially. And both Stefan and Carina are seeing some improvement in their capacity. They could not have made it this far without the help of family and their local community—for which they are very grateful! However, they have now exhausted their savings and are unable to keep up with their monthly living expenses. For this reason, I am reaching out to extended family and those who have known Carina throughout the years, as well as my personal friends. Stefan has applied for disability and they are hoping that it will start soon, but are not yet certain when or if it will be approved. Furthermore, prior to all this, Stefan had started a remodel project that got left unfinished. If it could be completed, it would offset some of their financial burden by allowing them to rent a studio apartment in their home.

Hola amigos y familiares,
He creado esta página de “Go Fund Me” para dar a conocer la situación en la que se encuentran actualmente mi hermana Carina ‘Salerno’ Crabtree y su familia, con la esperanza de que juntos podamos ayudarles.
En noviembre de 2022, Carina se enfermó de COVID y desde entonces ha estado viviendo con complicaciones de larga duración. Sus síntomas actuales incluyen una intensa fatiga intermitente, que le ha imposibilitado trabajar y cuidar de su familia durante el transcurso de estos casi mas de 20 meses. Como siendo las tareas cotidianas sencillas e incluso cosas que consideramos sencillas como leer, mantener una conversación con los seres queridos, ducharse o escuchar un podcast (por nombrar algunas). Estas son cosas que a veces (para ella) pueden resultar demasiado agotadoras. Desde que le diagnosticaron la enfermedad, sus médicos le han aconsejado que haga reposo constante y “radical”. No están seguros de que sea posible una recuperación completa, pero han insistido en que el reposo es el mejor camino para volver a una versión de la vida que su familia conoció una vez. Así que Stefan su marido, además de su trabajo a tiempo lleno, asumió todas las responsabilidades de Carina, incluida la educación en el hogar de sus 3 hijas. En el mes de octubre 2023, Stefan se tomó una licencia y ya hace 9 meses que se encuentra sin goce de sueldo para que Carina pudiera recuperarse. Nuevamente él y el resto de la familia volvieron a contraer el COVID. Como ya lo mencione hace más de nueve meses que la familia no recibe ingresos del trabajo de Stefan. Stefan sigue haciendo todo lo que puede para continuar con las tareas del hogar, educar a las niñas y cuidar de Carina. Por desgracia, ahora también Stefan está luchando con sus propios efectos de salud desde aquella infección del COVID a fines del 2023 y se está dando cuenta de que necesita mantener un ritmo y descansar más. La exposición continua a COVID también ha sido un reto; su infección más reciente fue el mes pasado en agosto 2024, lo que ha retrasado un poco la recuperación de Stefan en particular. Debido a estos problemas de salud, Stefan y Carina no saben cuándo podrán volver a trabajar.

Hasta ahora, la familia ha conseguido salir adelante económicamente. Y tanto Stefan como Carina están notando cierta mejoría en su capacidad. No habrían podido llegar tan lejos sin la ayuda de la familia y la comunidad local, por lo que están muy agradecidos. Sin embargo, han agotado todos sus ahorros y ya no pueden hacer frente a sus gastos mensuales. Por este motivo, me dirijo a la familia ampliada y a quienes han conocido a Carina a lo largo de los años, así como a mis amigos personales. Stefan ha solicitado una ayuda al gobierno y esperan que la autoricen, pero aún no saben con certeza si se la aprobarán o cuándo. Antes de toda esta situación, Stefan había iniciado un proyecto de remodelación que quedó inconcluso. Si se lograra terminar este proyecto aliviaria su carga financiera permitiéndoles dar en alquiler parte de su vivienda.
