On November 22, my brother Johannes, my sister-in-law Betina, and my two nieces, Violet (7) and Aster (5), experienced every family’s worst nightmare: their new home burned down, taking with it everything they owned. Fortunately, the family was not home, they had stepped out for just a few hours to bring over the last of their belongings from their old house. But heartbreakingly, their four beloved pets: dogs Gaia and Jill, and cats Steve and Sneakers, were inside when the fire started and did not survive.

This loss has left them completely devastated. In just a few hours, they lost not only their home and all of their possessions, but also their cherished companions who were part of their family.

Right now, they’re faced with the overwhelming task of rebuilding. They need help covering the basics: clothing, toiletries, bedding, food, school supplies, work tools, and other essential items that will get them through these next few weeks as they figure out their next steps and work toward stability again.
