Dear friends, family, and kind souls,
As you may know, we are extremely close with our family (the Carels) in Los Angeles. On January 7th, 2025, our Aunt Emma, Uncle Chris, and cousins, Timothe (18yo) and Tristan (16yo), had their lives turned upside down due to the devastating Pacific Palisades wildfires. Thankfully, they evacuated in time and are currently safe, but life is not, and will not be, easy for them for some time. Our family is completely displaced, hopping from hotels to friends' homes since January 7th, not knowing where they will shelter the following week. They have experienced so much generosity from friends and so many strangers in the LA area and are humbled by pure human kindness.
Chris, Emma, and their boys emigrated to the Pacific Palisades from Paris over 10 years ago. Pacific Palisades was where the boys grew up, went to school, made friends, and called HOME. Thankfully and miraculously, as of January 13th, their house is still standing, but they aren't able to access their home for more than 10 minutes at a time to gather our aunt's post-cancer medication, and it is unknown when/if the home will be habitable.
As you may know, California is experiencing an insurance crisis and unfortunately, my family was not spared. Their home insurance company dropped them and while they worked tirelessly to find another provider, they were unsuccessful. Therefore, they cannot count on recouping any of the losses they have and will continue to experience.
We are reaching out for your help today because they will experience a myriad of large expenses going forward. Currently, they must pay for lodging/housing, so that they can have a roof over their head. After that - repairs, cleaning, assessing whether the home is safe to live in due to all the smoke and pollution, and countless other expenses will come up. There are also serious fears of burglary in their community. Emma and Chris would like to hire some semblance of private security to protect what is left of their home to prevent robberies and looting, and hopefully, have something to come back to.
Any help, support, and generosity that you feel you can share is immensely appreciated. We are all so incredibly grateful to the friends, family, and strong community support that the Carels have already experienced. Thank you to all who have reached out, kept them in your thoughts and prayers, and we wish everyone who has been affected by this catastrophic disaster all the best in their recovery efforts <3
With love, thanks, and appreciation,
