The ANDREW ROBERTS SCHOLARSHIP FUND is a project-based award for independent student filmmakers offered by the Virginia Queer Film Festival, Inc., a 501(c)(3) IRS-recognized tax-exempt nonprofit. The scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student in a higher education filmmaking program who is seeking funding for an existing or planned film project that that explores the diversity of the LGBTQ community. We give preference to LGBTQ filmmakers as well as film projects that incorporate Southern LGBTQ voices.
ABOUT THE VIRGINIA QUEER FILM FESTIVAL
The festival provides access to original works of films by, for, and about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people and their families, and a forum for LGBTQ+ filmmakers to share and discuss their work with audiences. This festival is the first of its kind in Virginia and one of only a handful of LGBTQ+ film festivals in the American South. We host our festival each October on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA.
Our vision is to elevate the spectrum of queer stories to educate, entertain, and build deeper acceptance and understanding of the queer experience. While we accept submissions from all filmmakers, our mission is to foster local and regional community engagement by showcasing queer film programming, educational experiences, and social dialogue with a focus on Virginia and Southern voices.
