Our story began in 2015 with a monthly women’s event, called Scunthorpe Women’s Red Tent Group, which quickly transformed into a self reliant women’s group, becoming a community led, Community Interest Company by 2022. In 2023, we moved into our own building, on Ravendale Street North, Scunthorpe where we have been creating the services and resources our community were struggling to reach, in their personal lives. The space has become integral for the wellbeing of our original and growing women’s community, customers from the local surrounding area and individuals sent by social prescribers and healthcare professionals, while still renting a space in a building.
Our Aims
Connect: Continue to develop a supportive, kind and compassionate self actualised, self resilient community, which creates opportunities to build healthy connections regardless of ability, age, background, mental or health conditions.
Nurture: Provide a safe, inclusive environment particularly for women, youth and vulnerable, particularly those who can’t or don’t access regular services. The opportunity to connect with activities centred around our core values of connect, heal, nurture, learn, grow, play, support and collaboration.
Learn: Invest directly into our community through community advocacy building programming, up-skilling core volunteers and members, giving opportunities through learning, conferences, workshops etc to improve our workforce and those who return back to traditional employment.
Grow: To offer an organic platform to address issues both within the community and external to the community, by encouraging free speech and open communication. We encourage everyone to be able to speak freely and voice their beliefs and feelings, especially regarding difficult topics, in the hope for an authentic, inclusive, honest, transparent and non judgmental community ethos, with the belief of supporting people to grow.
Support: Support bridging roots community with services and agencies through collaboration, cooperation and conversation. As we represent no political, religious, government alignment, we remain inclusive to everyone.
Collaboration: Creative Community Solutions of complex matters such as grief, suicide, violence against women and girls, neurodiversity, trauma, loneliness and isolation of specific groups such as older people or those with disability, impacts of social economic divide, vulnerable youths, LGBTQ+
Activities: Our activities are mainly focused upon the benefits of wellbeing, companionship, building skills and community. We are a facility for the local social prescribing services and include groups such as grief peer support group, meditation, health, relaxation, women wellness, women's neurodiversity, community exhibition project focusing on women including VAWG and history, free art and traditional craft sessions, talking sessions, book club, and soon to be extending our outdoor activities with a new walking and biking group. The project is run by volunteers, and we have created an effective voluntary intergenerational program, aimed at individuals gaining confidence, purpose, skills and connections. We currently provide Gifts of Kindness, a pay it forward scheme; as a way of allowing those with very little to still access and participate with community and basic needs such as a hot meal and toilet facilities. We have toiletries, clothing and sanitary products, individuals are welcome to take with them from our community donations scheme. we have many small social groups which meet regularly as peer support, formed from workshops or programs created at Tent, some of these groups have gone to support the project, such as; Zentangles wellness art group started by a volunteer, a regular group of mainly widowed gentlemen called The Silver Foxes who have donated all the equipment and instruments for a new music project our community project is devising - customers use to sporadically play. A fortnightly picnic group set up by one of our grief group attendees - a program for those isolated or lonely, our new weekly homeschool ‘time travels club’ about to be launched by a group of mothers and educators who are part of the Tent team; as a response to different parents struggling with neurodiverse children and waiting times for diagnosis. Tent has a growing group of qualified and experienced therapists attached to our project, including councillors, coaches, holistic therapists specialising in chronic pain, anxiety, mental health, hormones, peri and menopause, suicide, domestic abuse, sexual and psychological abuse. Others focus on holistic healing such as massage, reflexology, cupping, indian head massage, meditation, yoga and reiki, and storytelling. We offer services at token rates on activities within our Women's Wellness monthly event. It is our hope to keep growing these connections, helping small businesses to grow, while providing accessible and inclusive access to those attending. Our core volunteers have lived experience with trauma and have accessed courses such as Suicide Assist, Mental Health First Aid, and Trauma Informed Care Response Training in order to now support others; our space is used as a safe space and part of peoples wellbeing plan, known for kind, friendly staff who are both welcoming and full of compassion.
Please help us to keep supporting our community! Any money received will help towards yearly bills and insurances, so we can keep using our profits to help people grow!
Much Love
Tent Team! ❤️
