My name is Erica Wingo, and I am the legal guardian of my cousin Chakotay Parks (Tay), who is 25 and autistic. I was married on October 30, 2021, and was blessed to finally purchase a home on April 8, 2023, when the unpredictable happened right before closing. Tay’s father passed away on March 26, 2023. At the time of his death, Tay was only living with his father because his mother, my aunt Kathy Parks, passed away in 2012.
Tay and I have always had a special bond, so I did not think twice and immediately became Tay’s legal guardian. As you can imagine, it has been an adjustment for us all. Tay is an amazing and bright young man who desires to live on his own; however, he does not realize that he will always need 24-hour care and guidance. Tay currently works 15 hours a week and is high-functioning. Tay enjoys video games, drawing, and hanging out in the community.
Tay, my husband, and I have lived in our home for over a year now. My husband and I are now expecting our first child. And although we are so excited, we are also a little concerned. Because of the housing war, we had to settle for a two-bedroom home with one bathroom. Tay and I have researched and toured several communities looking for the right home for Tay; however, we have been unsuccessful. Many locations do not have availability, and others have not had 24-hour care. Tay’s safety, independence, and comfort are very important to us. Tay has always lived with his parents and now myself, who he refers to as his mother figure.
We are asking for funds and contractors who can assist us in providing Tay with his own living space above our garage. We believe this will be the safest living arrangement for Tay. We have discussed this idea with Tay, and to say the least, he is extremely excited. He is already coming up with paint colors and designs.
Please help us make Tay’s wish of living independently come true, while having me nearby to help with his daily needs. Any donations or volunteers to help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your consideration.
With gratitude,
Tay, Erica, and Brandon
