I represent, pro bono, Tanya M, a 58-year-old woman who was evicted from her DC apartment in May of last year. Prior to the personal financial crisis which led to the eviction, Tanya, a life long renter, had never been behind in her rent. As you know, low-wage earners can easily be thrown into financial crisis, leaving them in debt and homeless, as is now Tanya’s situation.
After living for several nights in their car, Tanya and her teenaged daughter, B., moved into a shelter, which has been their home since May. Despite the challenges of living in a shelter, Tanya found a new full-time job and assisted B. through high school and into college. (B, despite all the pressures, made the dean’s list in her first semester!)
Tanya recently received notice that she has to move out of the shelter at the end of February. Like so many Americans, Tanya and her daughter have done everything right, yet find themselves in debt and homeless. Tanya’s rent debt and resulting negative credit report are making it impossible for her to be approved for a new apartment. Donations will allow her to pay off her debt and secure housing.
Curtis and I will make a substantial financial contribution to Tanya. I am hoping you will donate to support her as well. While all people should have housing regardless of who they are, I will note that Tanya is an amazing person! She is kind, brave, and generous; her first concern is always others.
I hope you will give as generously as you feel able.
