On New Year’s Eve, my fiancé Kent and I experienced a tragedy that completely changed our lives. A house fire destroyed our home, and in just moments we lost nearly everything we owned. The most heartbreaking loss of all was our beloved puppy Penny, who did not survive the fire.

We have each other during this tragedy, but little else. Our home, our belongings, and so many irreplaceable memories are gone. Right now, we are staying in a temporary Airbnb while we try to process what happened and figure out how to start over from nothing.

The emotional weight of this loss has been overwhelming. Grieving our puppy while also facing the reality of rebuilding our lives has been incredibly difficult. We never imagined beginning a new year like this.
