My stepmom Sunny is a new American citizen living in Bakersfield CA with my dad. They both drive for delivery order services to make ends meet. Sunny for UberEats, DoorDash and Walmart. My dad drives orders for Walmart and commutes to LA five days a week to do lab work. He’s a chemist.
Sunny had her car stolen right in front of her eyes yesterday. She had one UberEats order in the car and ran into a pizza shop to get her second order before delivering to the recipients. A woman got in her car and, as Sunny ran out after her … drove away.
This is the second massive loss while on the job. Earlier this year she accrued over 2k in damages when a woman backed into her car. Insurance wouldn’t help because she was driving for uber, uber wouldn’t help because … capitalism and worker negligence.
I have never started a GoFund me before but hearing her tearfully blame herself, and them (almost) canceling their trip to finally meet their grandson who was born early at 28 weeks, the darling boy they’ve been waiting to meet for months… I was like ENOUGH!
This amount would cover part of her losses and the lowest cost rental car for 3- 4 weeks while the police track down her Honda.
Absolutely anything would help. Simply so Sunny knows she’s not alone.
Additional context: because she was on the clock for Uber at the time of the theft (and the previous incident), her insurance refuses to cover damages or loss because “Uber’s insurance policy is responsible” however, Uber refuses responsibility because she has insurance.
