StreetScape Ministries is a refuge for Galveston's unhoused and low-income neighbors. Each service day, we welcome 50–80 guests (up to 120 on holidays), with always free hot meals, showers, clean water, coffee, clothing, toiletries, and more. StreetScape was founded by Darren and Michelle Smith in 2008, and has been operational since. Brian and Jennifer Parke have been directing it now since 2024, with Darren on the Board of Directors. We inherited a mission with deep roots, and we're now building the sustainable foundation it needs to serve this community in to the next decade and beyond.
Last year, inconsistent funding forced us into a weeks-long shutdown just to stay afloat, and this year was no different; not because the need went away, but because the funding did. We need to be permanently done with that cycle. We currently receive around $1,500 in monthly recurring support, which is enough for utilities, but not much else. Our one-time gifts have allowed us to expand services and offerings when they come in, but that funding was inconsistent. We are pursuing grants for facility repairs and infrastructure, but grants won't cover daily operations. That's what this campaign is for: a strong foundation everything else can be built on. We're raising $96,000 to fund a full year of stable operations every Monday, Friday, and Sunday. Here's what that covers:
About half goes to core operations, the baseline cost of running our eight-building campus: utilities, meals, kitchen supplies, outreach and survival gear, direct guest assistance, campus maintenance, and holiday and community gatherings. These are the day-to-day essentials that keep the doors open and our guests fed, clothed, and cared for.
The other half goes to growth and capacity, guest-work opportunities where we pay guests for campus repairs and maintenance, administrative and operational support to manage and sustain the mission long-term, and a financial margin so that one slow month never shuts us down again. We've always scaled our services to match what's available. This campaign is about finally matching our resources to the scale of the current need.
StreetScape is more than just a meal. Our campus at 611 37th Street includes a café, clothing rooms, showers, restrooms, laundry, small food pantry, tool shop, raised garden, and community space. All we do is the first step in a longer journey: we 1-provide immediate relief, 2-connect guests to case management, rehab, and transitional services through partners like St. Vincent's House, Catholic Charities, and Our Daily Bread, and 3-walk alongside them toward employment, housing, and self-sufficiency. We've seen guests go from sleeping on the streets, to getting apartments, jobs, and even starting small businesses with tools bought by or borrowed from the mission!
StreetScape is part of a network of support across the island — Central Church covers Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday mornings, Galveston Street Ministry covers Saturday, and the Salvation Army serves dinner each evening. When we hold our days (Monday, Friday, Sunday), there's coverage almost every day of the week. When we can't, people go without.
This is our first crowd-sourcing fundraiser because we need a stable foundation to be able to focus on serving those who need it the most. Help us fulfill our mission to "Love God, Love People" in this hope-dealing business. Together, we can show each guest that someone truly cares about them, and that tomorrow can be better than today.
Every dollar helps, but if you cannot donate, PLEASE SHARE this page. We have no marketing budget, and every share matters. Thank you for supporting local missions, like us. May God bless you as you bless others.
