I am Debbian Robertson-Burrell. I am in the state of Florida, USA. I am trying to raise funds for my family members for the rebuilding of their homes, the funds will be used to purchase items, such as roofing materials, replacing furniture and appliances, gallon tanks to store water, equipment such as a power saw to remove downed trees, generators, installation of solar lights, and if possible a Starlink satellite internet for communication.
My mom was at the Black River hospital for four days to give birth to me. My grandma, who was not a licensed midwife, took her back home and was the one who delivered me at birth in her home at Tryhall, White Hill, Saint Elizabeth. Grandma’s home was not just a house; it was a sanctuary filled with memories of worship, discipline, love, and laughter. Her home stood resilient for years, weathering many storms, such as Hurricane Charley (the notorious '51 storm), which she would often speak about as the worst storm Jamaica had seen; Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, which I experienced as a child in the same house; and then, in the same house, here comes Hurricane MONSTER MELISSA. As the winds howled and the rain lashed through St. Elizabeth, our house, like all the other homes in the community, was not spared. Despite the preparations, Hurricane MONSTER MELISSA was different; the warnings were clear, but the reality of what was to come was beyond comprehension. The roof is gone, the furniture's damaged, and the rain soaked everything.
The structure that once provided safety and comfort succumbed to the fury of Hurricane MONSTER MELISSA in what felt like a mental nightmare. Waiting for an uncertain hurricane is now a reality. My family and the entire community of approximately 150 homes remaining in White Hill, Saint Elizabeth, are without homes to live in, sufficient clothing, electricity, water to drink/cook, farms, animals (their livelihood), and accessible roads for transportation.
We are kindly asking for help to rebuild our family homes, other community members' houses, the school, and the church. Thank you in advance.
