Hello, my name is Spencer Shea, and I’m a Scout with Redondo Beach Troop 595. I am raising funds for my Eagle Project at the Plant Nursery at the Madrona Marsh Preserve in Torrance.
The Madrona Marsh is a unique local wetland, and the nursery is at its heart, growing the native plants necessary for habitat restoration and the survival of local wildlife. My own history with the Marsh, from a memorable Cub Scout Stargazing Tour to volunteering in my high school environmental science class, has shown me just how important this preserve is to our community.
My project focuses on repairing and improving the nursery’s infrastructure. The planned improvements include:
- Replacing a rotted roof: to protect unused pots from the elements
- Installing shade netting: to regulate temperature and light for optimal growing conditions
- Installing table cross-supports: to reinforce twenty propagation tables
- Removing damaged pots and replacing compromised sections of tabletops: to provide a safe workspace for the volunteers and proper infrastructure for the growing plants
We did some initial prep on November 8th. Our first full workday on-site is scheduled for Saturday, November 22nd, depending on the weather. We’re committed to our December 4th deadline.
Our estimated costs for this project are approximately $1300. We are teaming up with The Home Depot in Torrance for discounted building supplies, but the final total cost won’t be known until the project is completed. Any donations exceeding the project costs will be donated to the Friends of the Madrona Marsh. Your support helps preserve this vital local resource for future generations to enjoy. Thank you for your consideration.
