SLA has always been the kind of person who gives her all to others. As my close friend from high school, I’ve watched her raise children and grandchildren, help people heal, and support those escaping abuse or fighting for a better life. She’s a believer, a mama, a nana, and a friend who never hesitated to offer encouragement or a helping hand, even when she had little herself.

In 2019, after years of domestic violence, SLA made the brave decision to leave her abuser. She endured unimaginable injuries—multiple skull fractures, vision loss, broken hands and feet, and lasting trauma. Despite her strength and the court ruling that her abuser was responsible for the debts and damages, his recent passing means she can no longer recover what she’s owed. Now, with over 20 diagnosed medical conditions and complex PTSD, SLA is in a dire situation, struggling to cover medical treatments and basic living expenses while she waits for disability payments to begin.
