Roll for the Culture: Help Black Skate San Diego Provide Free Skating for Our Community!
Since 2021, Black Skate San Diego has been building a thriving, supportive skate community. Every week, we meet to provide free lessons, share knowledge, and create a safe space where Black joy, movement, and culture are at the center. Skating is more than just fun—it’s freedom, community, and healing.
Now, we’re ready to take it to the next level by launching a mobile skate pop-up with rental skates, allowing us to bring free and low-cost community skate events to neighborhoods across San Diego. This means more opportunities for Black children, families, and adults to experience the joy of skating—without the financial barriers that often keep our people from rolling.
Why Skating Matters
For generations, skating has been a cornerstone of Black culture—an outlet for self-expression, a way to build community, and a space where we can move freely, unapologetically. Beyond just recreation, skating is a powerful tool for:
Mental Health & Healing – Movement combats depression, anxiety, and stress, creating a positive outlet for Black youth and adults.
Community Building – Our events bring Black skaters together, fostering connection and belonging.
Supporting Black-Owned Businesses – We partner with Black vendors to circulate wealth within our community.
Physical Activity – Skating promotes health and mobility at every age.
But the reality is, many in our community don’t have access to skates or safe places to roll. Skate rentals at rinks are expensive, and many public spaces are not skate-friendly. That’s where we come in.
How Your Donation Helps
With your support, we will:
✅ Purchase rental skates in various sizes so anyone can join our community events, regardless of financial means.
✅ Host free & low-cost community skate pop-ups in Black neighborhoods, providing a safe space for movement, joy, and connection.
✅ Support Black-owned businesses by hiring Black vendors, DJs, and artists for our events.
✅ Expand our outreach to bring skating to more Black youth and families.
The Goal
Our goal is to raise $10,000 to cover:
Rental skates & safety gear
Event permits & venue fees
Community outreach & youth programs
Support for local Black businesses at our events
Every donation, no matter the size, helps us keep skating in our community where it belongs.
For nearly four years, we’ve built this movement from the ground up. Now, we’re asking for your support to make sure that every Black child, teen, and adult who wants to skate—CAN.
This is for us, by us. Let’s keep rolling, together.
