Support Single Mothers In Need

Hello, our names are Sonia and Olivia and we’re doing a Civic Action Project for school. With this project, we will try to support single mothers in need by fundraising money to donate to women’s and family shelters. Here is a little bit more about our topic:

Sexism is an issue that has always been an issue in humanity. Despite growing awareness and change in the matter it continues to be an issue that stems from rising generations seeing these patterns, but not realizing the wrong in it and viewing it as normal as well as having prejudice towards women for a variety of reasons.

Today, we’re focusing on two ways that sexism is an issue for women and their families and the first one is how women’s hygiene products cost more. This includes soaps, shampoos, deodorants, razors, etc. There are millions of people out there who need financial support to buy these products, or have to use men’s products for practicality because the prices are higher than they need to be. Things like dry cleaning are also more expensive for women due to society's norms on women having to look “presentable”. We hope to send part of our earnings from donations towards buying feminine hygiene products.

The second issue we are addressing is underpay for women in the workforce. Women are typically only paid 80 cents for every dollar that men make. Despite it seeming like not that big of a difference, it adds up. One statistic we looked into more deeply is the gap of pay between men and women working as waiters and waitresses and women earn a little more that 10,000 less than men per year waitressing. In cases where there are single moms being paid less, this $10,000 gap means needing to pick up another job to help fund both the mother and the child, and ultimately resulting in having less time being spent with said children which affects their mental development. This also connects back to how due to lack of pay, women aren’t able to afford these things on a constant basis. We hope to send the other part of our earnings towards helping fund their children’s clothes and school supplies.
