Imagine trying to speak, learn, or connect with others ; but being unable to because the world just doesn’t understand you. This is the daily reality for over 300 million people worldwide with neurodevelopmental disabilities such as Autism, ADHD, and Down Syndrome.
Hi, I’m Simran Bakshi, an incoming freshman at Roslyn High School. I’m passionate about making our community more welcoming and inclusive for individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities. That’s why I’m fundraising to install communication boards and adaptive swings in local parks to help break down barriers and create joyful, accessible play spaces for all kids.
Many people with communication challenges rely on AAC devices like tablets to express themselves. But these devices often don’t work well outdoors due to weather, glare, or dead batteries. Communication boards are large, durable panels with symbol-based grids that allow non-verbal individuals to point and share their needs, feelings, and ideas ; helping them connect with others in playgrounds and community spaces.
Play is essential for children's growth and happiness. Adaptive swings provide stability and comfort for individuals with limited core or upper body strength. These swings promote social interaction, encourage inclusion, and even act as therapeutic tools, allowing individuals of all abilities to enjoy the freedom and fun of swinging alongside their peers.
Your support will help fund the installation of these communication boards and adaptive swings in local parks, creating spaces where everybody feels seen, heard, and included. Together, we can foster acceptance, understanding, and joy for individuals of all abilities.
Please join me in making our community a place where no child is left out.
Thank you for your generosity and support!
