My name is Sharon B. I am 65 years old, and I never imagined I would find myself in a situation like this.
I opened my home to someone who was fleeing domestic abuse because I believed in kindness and compassion. What was meant to be a temporary act of help slowly turned into a situation that has caused fear, emotional exhaustion, and significant legal stress for my family and myself.
My 4 dogs are also suffering the stress by being crated or locked in bedrooms for hours at a time.
Over time, boundaries were crossed, and the situation became increasingly volatile and stressful. Asking someone to leave your home is not easy—especially when you once cared deeply about their well-being. Living in constant anxiety and conflict is not something anyone should have to endure, particularly in their own home.
We never asked for rent or utility money, and when asked to leave, the situation escalated into a legal dispute that I cannot navigate alone. I am now facing mounting legal costs to follow the law.
I have not worked in several weeks as my home has been left open and vulnerable to theft. I should not be afraid to leave my house.
As a retiree, these unexpected expenses are overwhelming. I am not seeking revenge or punishment—I am only seeking stability, dignity, and the right to live peacefully in my own home.
