Support the 2025 SF International Flor Y Canto Literary Festival!
The Mission’s beloved Flor y Canto Literary Festival returns—and we need your support!
Flor y Canto was started in 2008 by San Francisco’s first Latino poet laureate, Alejandro Murguía, to celebrate La Misión’s deep literary roots and to invite poets from around the world into our vibrant neighborhood. For three unforgettable days, literature spills into the streets—from opening invocations in Balmy Alley to poetry readings on Calle Veinte Cuatro and inside beloved local businesses.
Past festival featured events at Precita Eyes, Evolved SF, Mission Synth, Adobe Books, The Red Poppy, Praxis, Acción Latina, and Medicine for Nightmares. We celebrated new books by Mexican author Reyna Grande and Salvadoran poet Claudia Castro Luna, hosted intergenerational workshops, events for los niñ@s, and music and dance performances. Our 2022 community awards honored founder Alejandro Murguía, Profesora Naomi Quiñonez, and Nicaraguan OG poeta Roberto Vargas. In 2023, we honored Mission poet, artivist, and professora Leticia Hernández. In 2024 we honored community poet Cathy Arellano.
Thanks to your support, we’ve welcomed literary legends like Ernesto Cardenal, Francisco X. Alarcón, Daisy Zamora, Juan Felipe Herrera, Cherrie Moraga to perform right here in our neighborhood. The festival has featured poets from Fresno to Yucatán, from Tijuana to the Nuyorican movement, and familia from barrios across Los Angeles.
This festival is built with corazón—entirely volunteer-run and community-led.
