In 2018, I met a woman who shared how much Lovejoy Senior Center meant to her — a place that gave her connection and a sense of community. Spending time there, I saw how important senior centers are in reducing loneliness and how much opportunity there is to bring more creative programming into these spaces.
Today, nearly half of low-income older adults report feeling socially disconnected. Research shows consistent participation in creative social activity is associated with up to 48% lower risk of depression in older adults.
Senior Centertainment brings creative connection directly into senior centers across NYC. We listen closely to what seniors want and partner with artists to create programming around their interests. From painting workshops and dance sessions to live music, and writing groups, we work to bring health and happiness into senior centers.
In the past 8 years, we’ve:
• Reached seniors in all five boroughs
• Produced 300+ volunteer-led events
• Partnered with 7 senior centers
• Built a dedicated network of artists
But we’re just getting started. There are 337 senior centers across NYC, many with little or no access to arts programming. We’re raising $40,000 to fund a full year of programming so we can reach more communities and expand what’s possible.
Your support will help us:
• Bring arts programming to more centers
• Celebrate meaningful milestones and community moments
• Provide paid opportunities for artists
• Deliver programming centers couldn’t otherwise offer
Every dollar directly funds creative programming and connections for seniors. Loneliness is a public health issue. Community, connection, and creativity are part of the antidote.
