About a month ago, I shared a heartfelt post on Facebook about a man many in Duson know and love — Mr. Sedrick. He’s a local treasure who works at Champagnes, rides his bike to and from work each day, and greets everyone with the biggest smile. Sedrick has a speech stutter and some developmental challenges, but what stands out most is his kindness, joy, and gentle spirit. Over the years, I’ve seen him light up as people walk into the store. He truly is one of a kind and has such a love for people while just wanting to be loved!
When I asked Sedrick what he’d like for his birthday, he happily mentioned that he could use a new couch — his old one was falling apart. I laughed and told him we’d see what we could do. When my husband and I delivered the couch, we were heartbroken by what we found: a home with no A/C, holes in the roof and floor, no hot water, and a window broken wide open to the Louisiana heat.
I went to Facebook asking for help, just a window unit and a tarp. What happened next was a miracle. The community came together and raised enough funds to get to work for Sedrick! An HVAC company installed a brand-new A/C unit at no cost to Sedrick. A local roofer repaired and sealed his roof at no cost. A plumber is installing a new water heater and we got his broken window fixed. We replaced his couch, got him a new stove, a dining table, a dresser, and even a 55” TV that was donated. We’ve patched parts of his ceiling and floor and are continuing to make small improvements to his home.
The best part? After weeks of inviting him, Sedrick finally came to church, and now he never wants to miss a Sunday. HE LOVED IT.
This GoFundMe isn’t about one-time help, but continued care. Sedrick has lived alone for years with no family nearby, relying on the kindness of locals. We truly believe God placed him in our path, and we want to keep making sure his home and life are safe, comfortable, and full of love.
If you’ve followed Sedrick’s story or just feel led to give, any donation — big or small — goes directly toward improving his living conditions and caring for his ongoing needs.
Thank you, Acadiana, for loving Sweet Sedrick so well. He’s a gift to all of us, and it’s been an honor to be part of his story.
