Support Sea Scouts: Rebuild After Fire Disaster
Donation protected
We are the Parents of 1776 and we support Boy Scout and Sea Scout groups in the San Ramon area. Since 2010, we've offered an educational sailing program based in Alameda, CA, that gives Scouts a chance to learn STEM skills aboard a sailboat. We take the Scouts to destinations within the San Francisco Bay Area. We have even gone outside the Golden Gate to sail down to Santa Cruz and Monterey!
Around 8:45 pm on May 30th, 2025, during an unusually hot evening, an electrical fire broke out inside the cabin of our 1983 Catalina 36. The fire destroyed the kitchen (galley) area, melting drain pipes, and water started coming in. Then it spread to the aft cabin, melting wiring, engine hoses, and the fiberglass. Intense heat melted our newly donated HAM radio and most of our electronics. Our best guess is that the incoming water doused a lot of the flames and it burned itself out.
Although the boat's exterior and sails were untouched, our boat is beyond repair. Unfortunately, boats older than 20 years can't be insured, so it's a huge loss for our Scouts.
Some of the equipment outside the cabin can be reused on another Catalina 36, so we're raising funds to get a replacement.
We're a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit charity, and if you have a boat to donate, we can provide a letter recognizing the value of your donation. Businesses can donate via Benevity, and 100% of the funds we receive will go toward replacing the Sea Scout boat.
Thank you for helping our Scouts recover from this disaster.
