On Monday, October 13th, just one day before they were set to be discharged, Chelsey and Steve faced every parent’s worst nightmare — their sweet Scottie coded and went into cardiac arrest. It was a long day filled with fear, heartbreak and uncertainty. The doctors braced them to prepare for the worst.
The team was able to place Scottie on a machine called ECMO, which circulates her blood and gives her heart and lungs time to rest. Against all odds, Scottie’s initial CT scan showed no catastrophic bleeding or stroke, giving everyone a glimmer of hope.
Over the past two weeks, her incredible medical team at SickKids has worked tirelessly to help Scottie come off ECMO;
however, she’s proven to be a little “whack-a-mole” — each time one issue improves, another challenge arises. Unfortunately, ECMO is not a long-term solution but a temporary bridge. Scottie is now approaching the limits of what the machine can safely provide.
Funds raised will go toward helping Chelsey and Steve stay close to Scottie — to remain by her side in the city, where she needs them most. But, the heartbreaking truth is that these funds may also need to support difficult arrangements should Scottie lose her battle.
Through it all, Chelsey and Steve continue to hold onto hope. Their motto has been:
“As long as Scottie is fighting, so are we.”
They are deeply grateful for every prayer, every positive thought and every bit of love sent their way .
Funds raised above their expenses will be donated back to SickKids in Scottie's honour.
