Hi, my name is Salina!
I am a 30-year-old trans Latina. I have served four years in prison and I'm coming home at the end of September. One of the things I’m most eager about is getting back into the community, and having safe and healthy housing is a vital part of that. Among other things, I am looking to raise funds for housing expenses.
My hope is to move into a studio apartment in a nice and friendly neighborhood. I want to surround myself with healthy influences, a community that will help keep me out of the prison system. Having my own apartment will give me stability and autonomy to support myself. I hope to be able to support other people coming out of prison, too!
Funding will go towards my housing expenses, and any extra will go towards:
-paying off debt, school loans
-establishing financial stability
-arranging for gender affirming surgeries
-going back to school and taking classes to finish my degree (I have an Associates from Lackawanna in writing, and almost finished my BA in Psychology from Penn State)
I want to be really active when I come home. I would love to volunteer in the community, and get a job at a nonprofit that supports incarcerated people. I want to start my own nonprofit advocacy for survivors of prison sexual violence because I am a survivor of sexual assault in prison.
One of my dreams is to become a writer. I would love to write for a prison newsletter, and hope to publish a book someday. And start a cupcake truck!
What I've learned is that if I am not afraid to ask for help, there will be people willing to help me. Asking for help will keep me connected to my community in a healthy way.

** The above is based on Salina’s words, transcribed by comrades in Queers Against Incarceration and Jailbreak supporting her homecoming.
