To anyone who has ever been touched by Sage Programs, this is a call to action and a request for support.
It is so painful to share this news: Sage Programs has been closed down by the city of Boulder due to a zoning complaint. Over the past few weeks, we have had to completely and abruptly shut down every offering that had a home on this land. We are shocked and grieving the sudden loss of this sacred touchpoint for our community.
I am writing to vulnerably request financial support for my parents and for Sage Programs. Sage and Christopher have dedicated the last 30 years to creating and sustaining this deeply heart-centered, nature-based community. Their life's work has been an act of reverence and love! Theater woven together with mythic explorations, singing on Turtle's Back, ceremonies, children’s programs, every beginning and ending being held in a circle, tending and honoring the medicinal gardens, and their land that has held so many people.
Their land has been a place where people of all backgrounds, political beliefs, spiritual alliances, and orientations of all kinds were able to come together and find goodness in one another. They could sit in circles and sing out their heartfelt desire to live in a better world for themselves and their children.
In a world where differences are highlighted and disconnection is rampant, Sage Programs offered a place to just rest, find connection, and be received with generous, open hearts. You did not have to think a certain way or believe a certain thing. You could be the messy human that you are and still find a home in the circle of this magical place.
The one law of this land was: "There shall be peace. Peace in your heart, peace in your mind, and peace in your body." Because of this living principle, when something happened that broke the peace, we as a community showed up to repair and understand, to find our way back to one another. This gift of connection and repair is a remedy for the world we are living in.
The city has shut down our program because of zoning concerns. The amount of hoops and hurdles feels overwhelming! We are planning to go to city council and sing out our deep-hearted request to have our land and this work be grandfathered into the fabric of Boulder! When we decide to go, we will be sending out a letter to you, our community, asking you to show up and share about all the love, care, devotion, reverence, joy, and community that you have received from Sage Programs. Let us fill the room with our love and the faith that goodness can prevail, so that we can open our gate again.
My parents have never pursued this work for financial gain but rather as a deep reverence to serve “Spirit that lives in all things” (as my mom always says). Their livelihood has been sustained by their good, daily work and the shared belief in a more connected, soulful world.
As they face financial hardship, I am asking for help. Their life’s work has been a living, breathing gift to the community. Without assistance, they risk losing not only their livelihood but also this sacred space they have cultivated for so many.
Any aid you could provide would help sustain my parents, the land, pay for consultants, possibly lawyers, but most importantly honor the decades of love, care, and wisdom they have poured into this community.
