Help Me Support My Mother-in-Law Rosita Garcia’s Fight for Recovery

I’m reaching out with a heavy heart to ask for your compassion and support during one of the most difficult times our family has ever faced.

My mother-in-law, Rosita Garcia, 79, is currently hospitalized in Iloilo City in critical condition, fighting severe pneumonia—without medical insurance.
But this is not just a sudden crisis. It’s the latest and most serious episode in a long, painful journey.

Nanay Rosita has been semi-vegetative for the past three years, following her diagnoses of dementia and Parkinson’s disease. Previous CT scans revealed she had suffered multiple ministrokes, which caused irreversible damage to her brain, leading to the loss of her speech and contributing to her cognitive decline.

She has needed full-time care at home, with daily sponge baths, spoon-feeding, and full diaper use, as transferring her to the bathroom has become too difficult. She spends her days lying in bed or sitting in a wheelchair, largely minimally responsive, but comforted by the loving voices of her family. Over time, Rosita has experienced severe muscle wasting and is now extremely frail—almost skin and bones—from years of immobility, illness, and poor appetite.

In the past several years, Rosita has been in and out of the hospital multiple times, each admission taking a heavy toll—not only physically and emotionally, but also financially. With each hospital stay, the cost of treatment became harder for us to manage. We’ve done everything we can to provide the care she needs, but the financial burden has grown heavier with each passing year.

Ten days ago, Rosita developed a fever and persistent cough. Despite being treated with medications at home, she grew weaker, lost her appetite entirely, and was admitted to the hospital with dangerously low oxygen levels (in the low 80s). She was fitted with a nasogastric tube (NGT) for nutrition and began antibiotic treatment, but her initial medication (Piperacillin-Tazobactam) failed. She has since been switched to a stronger drug—Meropenem—and is now on BiPAP respiratory support to help her breathe.

With no medical insurance, the cost of her care is rapidly increasing, and there is no clear timeline for recovery. Hospital bills, specialized medications, oxygen therapy, and round-the-clock care are becoming too much for us to handle on our own.

This situation has taken an especially deep emotional toll on my wife, Rosita’s only child, who is devastated to see her mother suffer this way. Our three children—Rosita’s only grandchildren—are also struggling to understand and cope with what’s happening. We are doing all we can to stay strong for them and for her, but we have reached the limits of what we can manage alone.

We are now humbly asking for your help.
Any amount you can give will go directly toward Rosita’s medical expenses. If you're unable to donate, please consider sharing this message to help us reach others who may be able to support us.
From the bottom of our hearts—thank you for your kindness, generosity, and prayers.

With heartfelt gratitude,
DJ Sotelo & Family
