A daughter’s Plea for Help: Supporting My Mother’s Recovery After Stroke

Dear friends,

My name is Nett Yerks, and I am reaching out for help on behalf of my mother, Rose, who suffered an ischemic stroke on the morning of March 11th (Thailand time). My mom is 69 years old, has no insurance, and relies solely on my support. I’m the only one who helps her financially, despite having limited income myself. I have always prioritized her well-being, and now, more than ever, I need assistance to provide her with the care she needs during this incredibly difficult time.

Let me tell you a bit about my mom. Rose is a strong, loving woman who dedicated her life to taking care of others. She sacrificed her career to care for my grandparents and me, never once hesitating to put others before herself. For decades, she worked tirelessly to support and care for both me and her aging parents, even though it meant putting her own dreams and ambitions on hold. As she grew older, she continued to care for others, even as her own health began to decline.

I have been helping her with my income for over 10 years, sacrificing my own needs to ensure she’s comfortable and doesn’t have to worry. I have never traveled or treated myself to anything for years, simply because I want to ensure her happiness and peace of mind.

On the night of March 10th, I called my mom, but there was no answer. When I later got in touch with my cousin, she told me that my mom was acting strangely. She was repeatedly saying my name, had forgotten how to unlock her phone, and couldn’t remember the names of her family members. Concerned, my cousin immediately rushed her to the hospital, where doctors confirmed that she had suffered an ischemic stroke. She was given medication to thin her blood and admitted for 24-hour monitoring.

My mom also has diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, which makes her recovery even more challenging. After 24 hours, a therapist attempted to work with her, but there was no improvement. The doctors have said that while recovery is possible, it will take time, and they cannot guarantee she will return to her normal self.

Because my mom is unable to care for herself, I’ve had to make the difficult decision to move her to a nursing home that can provide round-the-clock care. Unfortunately, the cost of the nursing home is far beyond my financial means. I recently started a job as a flight attendant, hoping to visit her once my probation period ends, but I’m unable to be with her right now as I can’t leave during my probation.

The situation is overwhelming, and my family members are unable to help, as they are elderly themselves. I am now turning to you in a moment of deep need, asking for any support you can offer to help me provide the care my mother deserves.

I am humbly asking for help to cover the cost of my mother’s nursing home care for at least this year, so I can continue to work, save, and eventually travel to Thailand to be with her. I want to be strong enough to support her in every way possible, and your kindness will allow me the time and peace of mind to do so.

If you are able to contribute in any way, I would be forever grateful. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story and for considering any help you may be able to offer. My mother and I would be deeply thankful.

Warmly,
Nett Yerks
