Community care means that we take care of each other. Through these tumultuous times as fascist authoritarian governance permeates our society, the people closest to us are experiencing unforeseen challenges along with adjusting to new conditions. We are being asked to show up in new and creative ways and to give what we can however we can to help the people around us.
Ronnie, a Black, queer, disabled community organizer and Unitarian Universalist seminarian rooted in the California Bay Area is in need of your support. Ronnie is a dedicated member of multiple communities often working toward creating just systems, healthy environments, and healing resources for historically marginalized and vulnerable populations. In December 2024, Ronnie was laid off from her full-time nonprofit position working as a faith-rooted organizer in the housing justice movement. Since then, she has yet to secure new employment.
Things have also shifted in unexpected ways for Ronnie. Her new access needs are requiring that she find more accessible and stable housing. As many people know, securing housing in the Bay Area is often challenging with rising rent prices and few accommodations.
If you know Ronnie you know that she is a passionate worker for progressive movements. She is a generous friend, collaborative colleague, and trustworthy confidant. She weaves connections between people that contribute to their resiliency and collective liberation. Ronnie believes that community is the key to a healthy person and healthy society. She pours out her heart and her skills as an agent of change and transformation, often in the face of violent systems that are designed to fracture us and disconnect us from the things we need to survive and thrive.
While we have all been conditioned to recoil from accepting help and support in difficult moments because of the myths of capitalism and white supremacy, Ronnie is choosing to lean into the trust that her community can and will surround her with love and resources not just in theory, but in practice.
Ronnie’s goal is to secure enough funds to support herself through the next 3 months before the start of Fall semester where, soon after, she will have the financial aid support to continue in her program and (hopefully) a new job. Your donation will also help Ronnie devote more time to her ministry where she centers human dignity in the pursuit of ensuring that everyone has the necessary tools, spaces, and resources to reach their full potential.
We can celebrate that although times are rough, Ronnie is surrounded by love and care. The ask of $14,000 will go toward monthly living expenses and moving expenses (deposit, first months rent, and moving support).
For those of us who share Ronnie’s vision of a world in which all of us are individually and collectively stable and held in care, this is an invitation to make that imagining a reality. Join us as we hold Ronnie up together, and help her know how precious and beloved she is.
