Hi. My name is Edwin and I’m based in the U.S. I’m reaching out to ask for your support in improving roadway safety in Zambia, especially for pedestrians and bicyclists.
In the U.S., we benefit from infrastructure that helps keep people safe—sidewalks, bike paths, crosswalks, and street lighting, which are easy to take for granted. However, in many parts of Africa they simply do not exist. As a result, the majority of people—especially women and children—must walk or cycle along busy roadways without basic safety protections.
I witnessed this firsthand during my first visit to Zambia, where my daughter was conducting medical research. I was struck by the number of people walking alongside high-traffic roads with no sidewalks, little to no shoulder space, no street lighting, and minimal visibility—often wearing dark clothing. It was alarming. When I shared my concern, my daughter challenged me to do something!
Through this GoFundMe campaign, I want to support practical, cost-effective solutions that can save lives:
• Provide reflective vests and belts to improve visibility
• Deliver safety education for students and parents at primary schools
• Install safety signage and paint crosswalks near schools and shopping areas
While long-term improvements like sidewalks and better lighting are critical, these immediate steps can make a difference today. Something as simple as wearing a reflective vest can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and injuries.
All funds raised will be sent directly to the Zambia Road Safety Trust, a nonprofit organization working on the ground to implement these solutions. Your support—of any amount—will help protect lives and create safer roads for those who need it most. Thank you for your consideration and for helping make a difference for roadway safety in Zambia!
