My name is Juan Cardenas, and I am the founder and organizer of Richmond Run Club.

One year ago, I started this club because, as a runner raised and living in Richmond, I couldn’t find a run club in my city. I knew our community needed a space where people could come together to move, connect, and support one another—so I decided to build it.

What started as a simple idea has grown faster than I ever imagined. Along the way, I’ve met incredible people who believe in the mission and have stepped up to volunteer and help the club grow. We proudly welcome everyone—walkers, runners, youth, families, kids, strollers, and even pets. Our goal has always been to create an inclusive space where all fitness levels feel supported and encouraged.

My biggest vision is to reach the youth of Richmond by partnering with local schools and creating positive opportunities centered around health, movement, and community.

Since launching, I have personally financed many of the club’s expenses to provide resources and experiences for our members. While some generous community members have made voluntary donations because they believe in the mission, this model is not sustainable long term.

To continue serving the community and expand our impact, we are working toward obtaining 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt status. This designation will allow us to apply for public and private grants, receive charitable donations, and access funding that will directly benefit the Richmond community—without ever charging a membership fee.
