Support Residents of the UC Townhomes!
Donation protected
The intention of this GoFundMe is to raise funds that will be dispersed amongst the UC Townhomes Resident Council to cover things like childcare, healthcare costs, transportation needs, basic subsistence, and other nuts and bolts expenses of the organizing efforts.
In July 2021, the current owner promised to cover all costs related to moving, but that has not happened.
More specifically, examples of what these funds will be used for are:
- Childcare costs
- Transportation needs
- Cleaning for current housing
- Emergency medical appointments and medication needs
We understand that this is a citywide problem and hope that you can help support this fight against big corporate developers in Philadelphia. We want to state our support for all other efforts to raise funds for people being displaced. We have solidarity with other fights around the city and especially with all other Altman Management Properties in Philadelphia.
Further, the major issue is the forced removal of Black families from West Philadelphia. With the threat of sale, Altman has already displaced 50 families, uprooting the lives of families with young children, disabled residents, and seniors. By being forced to leave their homes, residents will lose proximity to essential services such as nearby grocery stores, transit stops, healthcare providers, and school districts. Rising rent costs, a shortage of affordable housing, and structural barriers embedded in the rental application and affordable housing voucher process make securing housing increasingly difficult.
This fight against big developers and universities taking over West Philly neighborhoods continues even as residents face imminent eviction.
Please support the individuals and intergenerational households whose lives have been upended and yet who remain at the Townhomes and in the struggle.
