My name is Jazmin Villegas. I am a retired Marine Combat Veteran. I am also one of the head committee members for the Red Oak, TX Say - NO MORE Data Centers campaign.
The members of this committee are volunteers who have dedicated endless hours of hard work and effort in an attempt to stop a proposed 830 acre data center from being developed next to homesteads and residential areas. This development would force homeowners to share property lines and be directly affected by the unknown long term impacts on our environment, our animals, our property values, and our health.
Through our efforts, we have organized and collected over 1,700 petition signatures, as well as notarized formal protest forms from homeowners within 200 feet of the proposed site.
We recently attended the Red Oak TX City Council meeting, where the council voted 4 to 1 to approve the rezoning of nearly 830 acres from AG to PD for use as an industrial park for data center development. This decision was made despite the Red Oak Government Center being filled beyond capacity with citizens opposing the zoning change. It was stated by the Mayor that the project had been in the works for six years.
Due to the lack of transparency from our city’s elected officials, and the fact that many residents only became aware of this proposed data center within the past two weeks, we are now taking further action. Our community has also learned that this would be the seventh data center approved in our small city.
Additionally, there are concerns that the City of Red Oak did not take the proper steps required by state law to notify all affected property owners, including those within city limits and those within 200 feet who reside in the Red Oak ETJ.
As a result, we are seeking legal representation.
We are asking for financial support from those who are willing and able to help us continue this fight. Any contribution, big or small, will make a difference.
If you are unable to contribute financially, please consider helping us by sharing our GoFundMe to reach others who may be able to assist.
Our initial goal is $10,000 to secure legal counsel and begin taking the necessary steps to protect our community. If additional funds are needed, we will remain transparent every step of the way.
