Hey! My mom was nagging me regarding what I want for Christmas this year and that got me thinking. Maybe a heated toilet seat to warm my ass? The thing is, I don’t really need anything. I have a good job, I am relatively healthy — despite eating Cheetos for breakfast everyday — and I’ve stopped going on 3 dates a week so I have more fun coupons.
So I told her that I wanted to do something for a man named Ram. Let me tell you about Ram: He works at the Austinite Market next to Terry Blacks. He is from Nepal and his English is not broken, it’s … well, ummm… totaled, but his smile tells you everything one could possibly say in English. Everyday I wake up to a text from Ram telling me to have a good day, and I know what you’re thinking but Ram has four kids and a wife that he sends money back to in Nepal (I’ve seen the pictures!!! So knock it off). I stop in to see Ram after I walk my loop and we have established a great rapport. Sometimes I don’t know what the heck he is saying, but I know whatever it is, it comes from a place of kindness. You see there’s few people that have true warmth in their eyes and a smile filled with gratitude. Ram has that gift and he shares it with everyone.
Ram works long hours from 2pm-2am everyday. He was recently hit by a car so now he is unable to bike to work. He has his welding license but does not have transportation. For this reason, I wanted to start this fund so that he could have more autonomy in his day to day life. This would allow him to apply to other jobs and put his welding license to good use.
So when your mom asks you what you want for Christmas this year, think about how much warmer your ass could really be, and perhaps instead think about how much impact helping someone out could have.
