We are Queralt, Bryan and Aurora, and we will be living in Mzimba, Malawi, for 6 months as volunteers supported by Humana People to People.
We are here to work side by side with 10 of the preschool communities in rural areas, supporting their actions regarding feeding programs to provide food for the children, garden programs to grow vegetables, income generating business for the community to generate profit for themselves, and training for the caregivers.
The goal of these projects is sustainable development, one in which the community supports itself, creating long-term change rather than temporary aid that only lasts while volunteers are present.
To make this possible, we need an initial investment: a starting fund to provide the essential materials needed to make the preschools safe, functional, and welcoming. These include materials to repair the roof, the doors, the windows, to build a kitchen and water tanks, and finally to plaster and paint the walls.
So, why do we need your help?
In Malawi, compulsory education only starts at the age of six. This means that in rural areas there is no official place for children to learn before that age. Yet, thanks to the strong sense of community that the Malawian population is rich of, they have organized some preschools centers on their own, so that young children still have a chance to learn.
Now try to imagine what this means in a rural area in the 4th poorest country in the world.
The teachers, called caregivers, are volunteers. They do not receive a salary and, in many cases, they have never received professional training. The preschools themselves are often in very poor conditions: doors are broken, parts of the roof are missing or full of holes, windows are uncovered, and walls are damaged.
From November to April, Malawi faces the rainy season, with heavy rains almost every day. With holes in the roof and no proper protection on the walls, children cannot attend preschool safely during this period.
Food insecurity is another challenge. When children are at preschool, they need to eat, but the food is scarce and many communities struggle to provide even one meal a day.
For this, we ask you to support this project with a donation, because every contribution makes a difference, even the smallest one. And if donating isn’t possible for you at the moment, simply sharing our message can have a huge impact too.
Thank you for supporting change that lasts.
