HELP US MEET A $50,000 MATCHING GIFT!
March is a critical month
We are so fortunate to have received ANOTHER $50,000 matching gift from The Wilson Foundation! All donations will be matched dollar for dollar to support urgent rent needs for March!
An enormous thank you to everyone who has contributed thus far. In a little over five weeks, we have been able to disperse $600,000 to 278 families to cover February and March rent and back rent. Incredible need has been met by incredible support, and we are so grateful.
Now in March, we are receiving many new and renewed requests every day. Families who are just finding out about us often have back rent due as well as upcoming bills. Families your donations reached last month also need support for March. We have raised our goal to $1 million to reflect this high level of ongoing urgent need.
While we are grateful that the streets of Powderhorn are quieter today than they were two weeks ago, no sense of safety has returned and there is no back-to-normal for families who have been sheltering in place or who have had family members detained. Households are increasingly at risk of eviction. Eviction compounds every harm. March is a critical month for rent support.
Please help us communicate the ongoing need, share the fundraiser with your networks, and contribute what you can.
Thank you for the love you are spreading to Powderhorn families. Powderhorn loves you back!
--------------------------------------------------
We are a small group of Powderhorn neighbors, and we have created this fund to administer direct financial support to meet the urgent needs of families in crisis as a result of being targeted by the current federal immigration enforcement activities in our community. Powderhorn is a community like no other. We are asking for your generous donations to help keep families in their homes this winter by directly supporting their rent and utilities expenses. Many individuals have not been able to work because it has become unsafe for them to leave their homes for fear of being detained.
For the sake of privacy and safety, these families must remain anonymous. We are connected with multiple specific families and these funds will go directly to supporting their needs.
We take care of each other, we keep each other safe, and we do so with love at the forefront.
We believe that hyper-local action is a powerful way to support those in need right now, and we are starting right where we live. Many of our friends, family members, and extended community members have been seeing what Minneapolis is experiencing and feeling helpless. You are not helpless. You can be part of this network of care for our neighbors. Your generous gift is truly saving the lives of people that we know, love, and will fight to protect.
How are families identified?
Families are identified through trusted community networks in Powderhorn For example, families learn of the fund through block groups, school networks, food shelves, and the intentional efforts of community members to reach out to those must vulnerable in this time. This is not a one-time intake or application process; needs surface organically through relationships, shared housing, care networks, and local connections.
To protect families, we do not publicly share identifying details.
How do I know my donation is being used to support families?
Beneficiaries are vouched for by community members who know them personally.
How any remaining funds would be used if any were to be leftover?
Funds are intended for ongoing rent relief and will roll over month to month. We understand that circumstances leading to the need for this fund may evolve. In the event that rent relief is no longer a pressing need in our community, we will redirect remaining funds toward long-standing and established food and basic needs support efforts in the Powderhorn neighborhood. Once a specific destination(s) is determined, GoFundMe donors will be informed.
Is this a long-term program?
This fund is designed to address immediate, short-term needs as they arise. While the fund may continue as long as needs persist, it is not a replacement for systemic solutions or public responsibility.
How will donors receive updates?
We commit to sharing general updates about the scope of need, the number of families supported, and how funds are being used in aggregate. We do not publish recipient details.
How can people support beyond donating?
In addition to donating, supporters can:
- Share the fundraiser within their networks
- Talk about why mutual aid matters in dense neighborhoods
- Support local efforts working toward long-term structural change
