Support Parkinson's UK in memory of my grandma
Hello friends and family!
As you'll know I recently moved to Okinawa, Japan. Since I've moved to this beautiful island I have wanted to explore the land and meet the people who live here. I want to honour my grandma, who sadly passed away in December 2024 after battling with cancer and Parkinson's disease. In her honour, I will walk the length of Okinawa, 125 km, over three days in April! She was a keen walker, and I have fond memories of walking with my family in my early years. My grandma was a very caring and strong woman, and had such a positive influence on everyone she met. Her strength and determination is very inspiring to me!
As a researcher in chemistry, I am very interested in reading about the latest developments in science research! In recent years our understanding of Parkinson's disease has advanced hugely. Researchers are constantly improving the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the disease, helping to develop new treatments and improving the quality of life of those who live with Parkinson's.
Parkinson's UK is a fantastic charity, I really admire the work they do to raise awareness of how Parkinson's disease affects a person's life. While many people are aware of the visible symptoms of Parkinson's - like tremors, stiffness, and motor skills deterioration - there's also many invisible symptoms including cognitive changes, mood disorders, and sleep trouble. You may also know that I am passionate about reducing stigma around poor mental health. As someone who has struggled with poor mental health, I understand how challenging it can be to seek support.
I expect the 125 km walk to be very challenging, but I feel supported and empowered by my grandma's determination. Please consider supporting me by donating to support Parkinson's research! Any amount is really appreciated, and will help to motivate me through the changeable Okinawan climate!
