Last year, I spent eight months in Dakar, Senegal, exploring the surf community and witnessing firsthand how migration is affecting local families. When I met Pape and Seydi, I was immediately struck by their awareness of their situation and their conviction that life overseas isn’t necessarily better. This consciousness is rare among people their age and in their circumstances, and it inspired me to share their story with the world.

Pape Fode is a local surf instructor and community leader, and together with his best friend Seydi, they are using surfing to offer hope and opportunity to the youth of Dakar. Through their school, NIOFAR, they provide a safe space for young people to find identity, purpose, and belonging at home, rather than feeling forced to seek uncertain futures abroad. Their passion for surfing and their commitment to their community is transforming lives and redefining what it means to dream of a future in Dakar.

Now, Pape and Seydi need our help to continue their important work. The funds raised will go directly toward purchasing new wetsuits for their students, better boards for lessons and rentals, and supporting Seydi in completing his ISA course. Additionally, the funds will allow both Pape and Seydi to take English courses, helping them reach a broader clientele and expand their impact.
