Help Us Build a Cleaner, Greener World Through Hygiene
We’re raising funds to spread sustainable hygiene to underprivileged communities around the globe through Owed Soap, a teen-led nonprofit founded by high schoolers in the Bay Area. Our mission is to donate handmade soap and establish soap-making stations worldwide — all using a powerful innovation: recycled cooking oil.
Our Story
After months of research, we discovered that scientists and communities around the world have successfully made soap from filtered used cooking oil. When combined with lye, the oil undergoes a chemical reaction that kills bacteria, producing soap that's just as safe and effective as store-bought bars. Inspired by a biology lesson and driven by environmental awareness, we turned waste into a life-saving resource.
Since launching in January 2024, Owed Soap has grown to three chapters across the West Coast. This summer, we’re sending 750 soap bars to families in Madhya Pradesh, India, and establishing our first international soap-making station in Japan.
Why This Fundraiser Matters
Each year, over 200 million gallons of cooking oil pollute our environment — while more than 3 billion people lack access to basic hygiene.
The rising cost of raw ingredients like lye and oil has made it even harder for vulnerable communities to access soap. By eliminating the cost of oil, we make hygiene more affordable — and sustainable.
How Your Donation Will Be Used
1) Ship soap bars to Madhya Pradesh, India
2) Purchase ingredients and tools for the Japan soap-making station
3) Buy lye and essential oils for California-based production
4) Support materials for our growing chapters
Looking Ahead
Beyond our immediate goals, we aim to expand our impact to more countries — especially in Africa, where access to hygiene is most limited. Our goal is to create sustainable soap-making hubs where local communities can repurpose their own used oil and make soap for themselves.
