I'm raising money to support NABU in its mission to solve the global literacy crisis so that every child can read and rise to their full potential. I have been involved with NABU since 2014 and have seen the impact of the organization's work firsthand over many years.
NABU exists because globally, over 250m children are illiterate. In developing countries, books are extremely scarce. Over 40% of children have virtually no access to books in the language they speak or understand, which is a major cause of illiteracy. This problem is only being exacerbated by school closures due to COVID-19.
When COVID-19 began to take hold last March, I joined NABU's Next Gen Leadership to support the organization's continued work in Rwanda during these difficult times. Today, I am raising funds to create a new early grade reading book in the Kinyarwanda mother tongue which will be foundational in helping children develop basic literacy in Rwanda, and I invite you to join me!
NABU trains local authors and illustrators to publish mother tongue stories. These stories are published for free on the NABU reading app, which is available to anyone with a smartphone in Rwanda. The NABU reading app is the fastest growing application in Rwanda and is reaching more than 90,000 children and their families every day. Each book published to the app opens up a new opportunity for NABU's readers to further develop their literacy skills through access to linguistically and culturally relevant books.
Since I first became involved in 2014, I have seen the impact that NABU's sustainable partnerships with local creatives has made in the effort to solve the global literacy crisis. Early grade readers tear through each new story much the way I did as a child at my local public library. This model has proven to be sustainable, impactful, and culturally relevant.
Any donation will help make an impact in providing every child with inclusive and equitable access to literacy.
