Kalota, our village in Zagori, was founded in the 16th century in the mountains of Epirus, northwestern Greece. Though never large, it endured foreign occupation and later survived bombings and torchings in 1943 during WWII. Today, after waves of migration and change, only three permanent residents remain. The cobbled streets and small bridges are overgrown with weeds and crumbling under mountain rainwater. Sacred fountains lie clogged, paths are vanishing, and houses stand deserted, slowly reclaimed by nature. Bears, wild boars, foxes, and weasels now wander the empty streets. A few visitors arrive in the summer, but none have the means or strength to contribute to the village upkeep.

By raising funds my aim is first to gather all the necessary powertools and equipment that will enable me to clean the streets and paths, and to repair or rebuild essential structures. Deweeding and shearing is step number one for public safety, plant health and fire prevention. Some tasks may require professionals or rented earthmoving machinery. Once the basic work is complete, I plan to install solar lamps and signs, and to renovate the communal guesthouse so it can be used again.

Kalota is a hidden gem—a sanctuary in one of Europe’s most important natural landscapes. Here, people live in harmony with nature, surrounded by mountains and forgotten by the outside world. Out of love for both the land and its traditions, with your help I will work to keep this place alive.
