Boxing for Health is a Black-owned boxing gym in the heart of Oakland. Like many small businesses facing rising rent and cost of living, our community could use your help.
Miguel Lopez, professional fighter and founder, started Boxing for Health over 15 years ago out of a labor of love. He dreamed of a place where everyone was welcome to come work out, learn boxing skills, and belong to a community that truly reflects the diverse population of Oakland (no matter gender, age, color, creed, or sexuality). Those of us in this community are a testament to the wild success of Miguel's dream. Boxing for Health is more than a gym; it is a family.
Miguel's Story:
Miguel had a tough upbringing in the Western Addition of San Francisco, where street fights were common. To stay out of trouble, he started learning martial arts and then turned to boxing, where he discovered the power of mental fitness and dedication. In 2000, he won the San Francisco Golden Gloves, and went on to begin his professional boxing career in 2009.
At first glance, Miguel looks like a tough Navy SEAL who could surely kick your ass (spoiler: he definitely can), but if you know him, you know him as the most warm-hearted and friendly guy who is always smiling, laughing, or showing off his signature dance moves around the gym as he teaches boxing fundamentals.
How You Can Help:
Funds raised will go towards operations, giving the gym a fresh makeover, and outreach so that more Bay Area folks can join the BFH family. We are trying to raise $15,000 by the end of March. Your donation will help us continue the important work of lifting people up and helping each other grow stronger inside and out.
Please donate and share your story of what BFH means to you. If you are unable to donate here, we ask that you consider taking a class, attending one of our open houses, and/or spreading the word.
The next open house will be:
April 4th at 10am & 11am
452 Santa Clara Ave.
Oakland, CA
A Statement from Miguel Lopez:
"For over 15 years, Boxing for Health has been more than just a gym. It has been a dream that I carried in my heart for most of my life — a vision of creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive space where people could come to learn how to box, build strength, relieve stress, and take care of not just their physical health, but their mental health too. That’s exactly why I chose the name Boxing for Health.
Every bit of support helps more than you know. Even simply sharing our story or bringing a friend to try a class can create momentum that keeps this community alive.
The support, loyalty, and love over the past 15 years mean more to me than I can put into words. This gym is not just a business — it’s a home, and you are family.
If you are able to support in any way, it would be truly appreciated from the bottom of my heart. And if not, please know that your presence and encouragement alone have already meant the world.
Thank you for being part of Boxing for Health. I’m still fighting for this dream — and I hope we can continue this journey together.
With gratitude,
Miguel Lopez"
